The Faculty of Environmental Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia was established on 1st September 2004. The faculty originated from the Department of Environmental Sciences which was established in August 1976 under the Faculty of Sciences and Environmental Studies. In the same year the Bachelor of Environment programme was introduced. This degree is recognised as a professional degree by the Malaysian Public Services Department and was the first environment programme offered in the South East Asia.


The faculty is equipped with sufficient resources and facilities for learning and research purposes. All the teaching and research laboratories are well equipped with special equipments such as HPLC and GCMS. There are also computer labs with recent technology and analyses software, and a resource centre that provides publications and references for students. Additionally, an Environmental Forensics Unit was established to carry out high impact research activities on environmental pollution and forensics and to be a training and technology transfer centre for environmental forensics.

The academic team has strong expertise in various fields such as environmental quality and conservation, pollution and control technology, environmental analysis and modeling, hydrology and hydrogeology, marine and freshwater ecosystem, environmental planning and management, environmental policy and governance, environmental ethics and environmental economics.





The faculty has established collaborations in academic exchange and joint research with well known foreign universities and organizations such as the National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (NYUST), Mitsubishi Corporation, The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS), Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, Kyoto University and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).

The faculty's academic programmes are certified by ISO 9001:2008 and have been given self-accredited status by Malaysian Qualification Agency. The programmes are assessed anually by an independent external assessor from well established institutions.

Stepping out of the ivory tower as an outstanding graduates of UPM and the faculty does not mean that your relationship with the community here is stalled. Former UPM graduates in general and the alumni of Faculty of Environmental Studies in particular, are welcome to join the UPM Alumni Association, which is specially set up to strengthen the bonds of fellowship and beneficial networks from the varied field of expertise and also be a member of the faculty’s alumni.

Many of the UPM Alumni members have been appointed as ambassadors for their big contribution in their respective fields, leaving a huge impact on society and the country - as well as bringing the name of the university internationally. In line with this success, the Faculty also wishes to celebrate the success of Faculty’s alumni, especially in areas related to the environment.
