This field of study covers the importance of research in planning and managing the environment for sustainable development. It covers the preparation of physical plans and strategies related to the environment on pre, during and post development. Research may also be carried out in the aspect of evaluation of development plans, preparation of a sustainable development model in specific areas such as urban planning, construction and road transportation systems, environmental management plan and assessment of sustainable development indicators.

This field of study also covers theoretical or empirical studies of the economic effects of national or local environmental policies around the world. Particular issues include the costs and benefits of alternative environmental policies to deal with air pollution, water quality, toxic substances, solid waste, and global warming.
